Talk: Energy retrofitting – January 2015

Why it doesn’t work and why it’s causing damp.

“Best over excitable conversation about architecture I’ve had in ages.”

Thank you all for coming to our January talk, it was great to introduce you all and thanks for all the positive feedback.

It was great to see householders, contractors, energy consultants and conservation architects as well as representatives from Bristol City Council and the Centre for Sustainable Energy come together to take an open minded look at the problems associated with energy retrofitting. We look forward to following up on your enquires.

  • Unintended consequences – filling in the gaps with no cost and low cost joined up thinking.

Project proposal to monitor the carbon savings achieved through no cost and low lost intervention such as ‘informed’ occupant behaviour, ‘successful’ draught proofing and ‘strategic’ insulation.

Informed, successful and strategic being to eliminate the cold spots and moisture related issue such as damp and degradation associated with turning down the heat and reduced air change rather than attempting improvement to the properties over all U-value, as with the EPC model.

This approach is key to the successful retrofitting of our existing housing stock, especially historic and conservation properties where less invasive interventions are favourable.
