  • Principles – air movement and internal weather.
  • Tools –  tape measure, saws, hammers, screwdrivers, drills and drivers.
  • Projects – expanding foam, vinyl draught strips and polycarbonate secondary glazing.

The second in this series of home improvement workshops, we’ll look at the principles of air movement, internal weather and apply them to successful draught-proofing, It won’t work unless it’s universal, start with the large to expose the small and when it’s whistling through the key hole, we’re nearly done, we have control of ventilation.

Changing the air flow through a house can create new draughts in unexpected place, reducing creature comfort, creating cold spots and can lead to damp. By observing patterns we can develop a strategy, closing internal doors can be as important as addressing the holes under the kitchen sink or behind the bath panel. Theres little point in insulating unless you’re air tight.

We’ll also be getting to grips with some tools, tackling some basics yet essential home maintenance. We’ll be working our way through the tool box this series, learning top tips and proficiency with every tool you’ll need around the home.

This month carpentry, could you remove an old painted screw from a door hinge? Things you never knew about a tape measure, top tips with a hammer, how to work with screws, being true with a saw and mistakes you don’t want to make with an expanding foam applicator gun.
