Workshop: Mitigating moisture

Damp meter

Damp – mitigating moisture.

Taking apart the hidden history of repeated damp remediation, the relationship between people, internal weather and the thermal envelope, how observation and investigation can rule out mis-diagnosis of rising and penetrating damp. Black mould, white salts and tannin stains.

When: Saturday, 15th August. 12-5pm
Where: 14 Richmond Road, Montpelier, Bristol BS6 5EN [Map]
Cost: Free (Booking essencial)

  • Principles – rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation.
  • Tools – observation, litigation and a wheelie bin.
  • Projects – mitigating moisture, cold spots and casting Hemp Lime to existing.

The forth and last in this series of home maintenance workshops, we’ll look at damp. Rising damp? or moisture drop-out caused by a cold floor. Penetrating damp? or how spring and autumn diurnal temperature fluctuation cause condensation that can run down the walls looking like a roof leak.

Broken gutter or evapotranspiration causing cold spots? Leaky chimney or an open plan kitchen or energy retrofitting concentrating moisture drop-out on the remaining cold surfaces? Condensation, understanding the invisible and extensive effects of moisture vapour on the traditional hygrothermal envelope.

We’ll also be getting to grips with some tools, learning transferable skills and tackling some basics yet essential home maintenance. We’ll be working our way through the tool box this series, learning top tips and proficiency with every tool you’ll need around the home.

This month vapour control part 2, hygrothermal passive heat recovery, the relationship between energy and damp. More than internal insulation we’ll be capturing energy from moisture, preventing heat loss whilst solving a damp problem. We’ll look at lime mortars and plaster as well as the purpose behind cornice, skirting boards gloss paint and wallpaper. Starting with the base coat we’ll get to grips with a trowel and applying lime plaster to our Hemp Lime wall, it’s easier than you’d think!
